2012, May 28

I haven't been parachuting in a while now.  There are some things though that really stick with you when you jump - you move so fast that only the things in front are really clear though -  and if you don't shut your eyes closed the sights outside can be really beautiful.  The sight of land from a few thousand feet up is really incredible - everything looks completely unreal.

This is another watercolor.

  1. At first glance what I now guess to be an unopened chute looked like a tree. Then I thought, that would be a ridiculously giant tree, that can't be a tree, gotta be the chute of the guy in front of the dude that you see out the door, right?

    1. You got it Sam. This is what it looks like when jumping from the rear ramp of either a C-5 Galaxy or a C-17 Globemaster. The Galaxy is very, very wide - the Globemaster not as much. All the jumps I've done were from a C130 from the side doors. You don't really see the parachute of the man in front of you when jumping form the side unless you're spinning, in which case you're not really going to be paying attention to them anyway. When that shoot opens though, you go from about a hundred miles an hour to around ten very quickly, and after that you can see everything. It's a very jarring experience.
